This painting is part of ‘The Gatsby Collection’, a series of soft pastel portraits that pay tribute to the roaring ‘20s and capture the exuberance and beauty of the time.

The collection was inspired by the notion that post-pandemic, we will find our ourselves in a similar flurry of aliveness. We will experience a dazzling sense of manic joy that comes with being reunited with people and things that we cherish, after a year of distance and deprivation. As I painted these women (or ‘my ladies’ as I endearingly refer to them), I thought about the feeling of having newfound freedoms and the liberation that fed the era’s iconic trends in fashion, art, and music. I also thought about how this new vitality came with a history of struggle and injustice. And so each of these ladies were painted to capture their deep sense of knowing of what was and what is—and all that defines what it means to be and feel truly alive.

Soft Pastels are a dry medium and are susceptible to smudging, thus they are carefully packaged to protect then during and after shipping. The painting is signed and will arrive in protective matting, behind Glassine, which will allow you to carefully handle the artwork until you take it to a framer. The pastel painting also comes with a certificate of authenticity and instructions on how to professionally frame and care for your new artwork.
